The Advantage Your Case Needs Attorneys Experienced on Both Sides of the Law

David M. Thomas

Austin Criminal Defense Attorney

David M. Thomas, Austin Criminal Lawyer

David is the managing attorney at Austin Defense Team. He is a United States Navy veteran where he served our country as part of a highly specialized anti-terrorism and force protection unit. After he was honorably discharged from the military, he became a police officer during which time he worked as a S.W.A.T. officer and a certified hostage negotiator. After five years in Palm Beach County, he decided to move to Austin, Texas, where he joined the Travis County Sheriff’s office. During his time in law enforcement, he consistently excelled in his positions. Further, he recognized that in many situations, a defense attorney could have had a defendant’s criminal charges dismissed but the defendant still ended up with a conviction. His expert understanding of the police component of the criminal justice system gives him an exceptional advantage when representing the accused in criminal court.

David credits the knowledge gained from his time as a police officer with giving him a unique ability to identify weaknesses in cases. This enables him to frequently get cases dismissed, including many DWI and felony drug charges—one of which included a student who was facing expulsion from a highly ranked nursing program. He was permitted to resume study when David had the charges dismissed.

David began with Austin Defense Team as a second chair trial attorney, where he assisted and gained experience on the intricacies of fighting criminal cases at trial. He quickly impressed the rest of the team and was quickly promoted to a full trial attorney.

David attended St. Mary’s University School of Law, where he was the Senior Associate Editor for the St. Mary’s Law Journal, earning him two awards for outstanding writing and editing. He interned in the Travis County 390th District Court where he assisted the prosecutor’s office in trials before the Honorable Judge Julie Kocurek.
